Dear Dr Govil, Dr Lattanzi and the New London Cancer Center Staff
I’d like to thank you for the care and treatment you provided for Jerry. For a long time Jerry and I were able to travel and enjoy good times despite his diagnosis.
I appreciate all you did for him. Fondly
Debbie
FDA Approves New Therapy for Prostate Cancer
April 29, 2010 — In a widely anticipated announcement, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an immunotherapy, sipuleucel-T (Provenge, Dendreon), for the treatment of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).
Often referred to as a vaccine, sipuleucel-T is an autologous active cellular immunotherapy, meaning that it is made from the patient’s own white blood cells and stimulates a patient’s immune system to respond against the cancer. The treatment needs to be manufactured individually for each patient.
“The availability of [sipuleucel-T] provides a new treatment option for men with advanced prostate cancer who currently have limited effective therapies available,” said Karen Midthun, MD, acting director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a press statement.
Sipuleucel-T becomes the first product approved by the FDA in a new therapeutic class known as active cellular immunotherapies, according to Dendreon press materials.
What is new at NLCC
We have updated our Lab and all the machines were upgraded.
New Lab tests available are Iron Studies which will help expedite decisions on your therapy of iron deficiency
Patients with Congestive Heart failure will benefit from Intravenous Iron replacement if they have iron deficiency even if they do not have anemia. Dr Lattanzi has presented the research data from recent studies to Cardiology Group and soon we will start this program.
New Survivorship Program 1st meeting is scheduled for May 19, 2010 at 12 Noon. Group from Yale New Haven Hospital will be working closely with us on this endeavor.
NLCC has signed up with Veeda Oncology Group to begin putting patients on Clinical Research Trials.
We have created a new brochure highlighting the services we are offering. Staff will be bringing these to area practices along with letters for patients to help them understand why they are seeing us. This is especially helpful when the services are not related to Oncology.
Our Bone Density and Reclast Infusion Program celebrated its 1st anniversary. We performed 450 Bone Density studies in our 1st year.
